Goldendoodle vs Labradoodle: Side-by-Side Comparison

The Goldendoodle and Labradoodle are two of the most popular Poodle mixes in the world, and choosing between them can be a challenge since they share many wonderful qualities. Both were developed to combine the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the friendly temperament of a beloved retriever breed. However, the parent breed influence creates meaningful differences.

Goldendoodles tend to inherit the Golden Retriever's gentle, patient nature, making them exceptionally calm and affectionate. They often have a wavier, more flowing coat that can range from cream to apricot to red. Labradoodles tend to be slightly more energetic and boisterous, inheriting the Lab's exuberant personality. Their coats can be more varied in texture, from wavy to tightly curled.

Both doodle breeds come in standard, medium, and miniature sizes depending on the Poodle parent used. Neither is truly hypoallergenic, but both typically shed significantly less than their retriever parent breeds. Grooming requirements are substantial for both, with professional grooming needed every 6 to 8 weeks to prevent matting.

If you want a slightly calmer, more mellow doodle that is exceptionally gentle with children and other pets, the Goldendoodle is often the better choice. Goldendoodles tend to be more patient and less intense, making them wonderful therapy dogs and family companions. They may be slightly easier for first-time dog owners to manage.

If you prefer a dog with a bit more energy and athletic drive, the Labradoodle may suit you better. Labradoodles can be excellent running and hiking partners and tend to have slightly better focus during training. They are also the original doodle breed and have a longer breeding history, which can mean more consistency in temperament when purchased from reputable breeders.
